Ouarzazate earned its "Hollywood of Africa" nickname honestly — this sun-baked crossroads town has stood in for ancient Rome, Tibet and imaginary kingdoms in dozens of major films and series. But there's more to a stop here than the studios, from kasbahs to the world's largest concentrated solar plant.
Atlas and CLA Film Studios
Two major studio complexes sit just outside town, with sets and props from productions including Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, Game of Thrones and Prison Break still standing and open to visitors. Guided tours (roughly an hour) walk you through Egyptian temples, Tibetan monasteries and Roman streets built for the camera — genuinely fun even if you don't recognise every film.
Taourirt Kasbah
This 19th-century kasbah in the centre of town was once the residence of the powerful Glaoui family and is one of the best-preserved examples of Moroccan earthen architecture, with a maze of restored rooms open to explore. It's an easy, walkable stop and a good introduction to kasbah architecture before Ait Ben Haddou.
Ait Ben Haddou (20 minutes away)

Fint Oasis
A lesser-known gem: a green, palm-lined valley about 20 minutes from town where a small Berber village sits among cultivated terraces, offering an easy half-day escape from the desert-brown landscape and a good spot for a quiet walk.
Noor Solar Power Station
Visible for miles outside town, Noor is one of the world's largest concentrated solar power complexes, with mirror arrays covering thousands of hectares. It's not a typical tourist stop, but a drive past or a visitor-centre stop (where available) is a striking sight and a reminder of Morocco's renewable energy ambitions.
Cinema Museum
A small but worthwhile stop for film fans, with props, cameras and memorabilia from decades of productions shot around Ouarzazate — a nice complement to the studio tour.
Where to eat
Central Ouarzazate has a good range of tagine-and-couscous restaurants catering to travellers, plus simpler local spots around the main square for cheaper, quicker meals. Hotel restaurants are a safe, easy option if you're short on time between stops.
How long to stay
Most travellers pass through as an overnight stop on a Marrakech–Merzouga route, which is enough time for the studios and Taourirt Kasbah. If film locations and photography are a particular interest, a second night lets you add Fint Oasis and a more relaxed studio visit.
How to get there
Ouarzazate is roughly 4 hours' drive from Marrakech via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, and is a standard stop on all Marrakech–Merzouga desert tours. It also has a small airport with limited domestic connections.
