Fez, Meknes, Rabat and Marrakech share a title that trips up a lot of first-time visitors: Morocco's "imperial cities." Here's what that actually means, what to see in each, and how to link all four into one trip.
What "imperial city" means
An imperial city is simply one that served, at some point in Morocco's history, as the capital under a ruling dynasty. Fez, Meknes, Marrakech and Rabat have each held that role at different times across the Idrisid, Almoravid, Almohad, Marinid, Saadi and Alaouite dynasties, which is why all four retain grand royal architecture, historic medinas and monumental gates — the physical legacy of once being the seat of power.
Fez: the oldest medina
Fez el-Bali is the world's largest car-free urban area and Morocco's spiritual and cultural capital, founded in the 9th century. Highlights include the Al-Qarawiyyin (among the world's oldest universities), the tanneries, and a medina labyrinth best explored with a guide on your first visit.
Meknes and nearby Volubilis

Best time to go
As with the rest of Morocco, spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer the most comfortable citywide temperatures; summer is hot but manageable given the cities' cooler evenings compared to the desert, and winter is mild by day but cool at night, especially in Fez and Meknes' inland climate.
