Casablanca isn't most travellers' favourite Moroccan city to linger in — but it's an excellent base for day trips, sitting within easy reach of imperial cities, Atlantic coastline and historic towns.

Rabat
Morocco's elegant, low-key capital is the easiest day trip from Casablanca — under an hour by train or private car. El Jadida and Azemmour
El Jadida's Portuguese Cistern and fortified old town, paired with nearby Azemmour's blue-and-white medina on the Oum Er-Rbia river, make a relaxed half-day or full-day coastal history trip, far less crowded than Essaouira.
Marrakech
An ambitious but doable full day: the Koutoubia Mosque, Bahia Palace, Jemaa el-Fnaa and the souks. It's a long round trip for a single day, so this suits travellers tight on time rather than those who can add an overnight.
Fez (long day)
Morocco's spiritual and cultural heart, with the largest car-free medina in the world, is a long but rewarding day trip — though an overnight lets you actually enjoy it rather than rush the labyrinth of Fes el-Bali.
Essaouira
A full-day trip to the laid-back Atlantic port town, with its fortified medina, fishing harbour and relaxed pace — a strong contrast to Casablanca's business energy. See our dedicated Essaouira day trip guide.
Volubilis and Meknes
Pair Morocco's best-preserved Roman ruins at Volubilis with the imperial city of Meknes, known for its monumental Bab Mansour gate and royal stables — a rewarding day for history-focused travellers.
Hassan II Mosque half-day
You don't need to leave Casablanca for this one: the Hassan II Mosque is one of the largest mosques in the world and one of the few in Morocco open to non-Muslim visitors on guided tours — an easy half-day addition before or after another trip.
Private driver vs train
Rabat, and to a lesser extent Fez and Meknes, are reachable by Morocco's reliable train network. Everywhere else on this list is easier — and often not much pricier per person in a small group — with a private driver, who can adjust timing and add stops the train can't.
