Merzouga (Erg Chebbi): the postcard dunes
Erg Chebbi is what most people picture when they think "Sahara" — sweeping orange dunes up to 150 metres high, easily accessed on foot, camel or 4x4 from a cluster of hotels and camps at the desert's edge. It's the most developed and most photographed dune field in Morocco, which is exactly its appeal and its drawback: the views are spectacular but you'll share them with more travellers, especially on 3-day Marrakech tours.
Zagora: the 2-day option
Zagora sits closer to Marrakech via the Draa Valley, which is what makes it the go-to choice for a 2-day tour when time is tight. The dunes here (technically Erg Zehar/Tinfou, near Zagora town) are smaller and more scattered than Erg Chebbi's, so the visual payoff is more modest — but you gain a full extra day back in your trip, and the Draa Valley drive itself, lined with palm groves and kasbahs, is a highlight in its own right.
Erg Chegaga: remote and uncrowded
Erg Chegaga is Morocco's largest and tallest dune sea, reached via a long piste past the town of M'Hamid. There's no road to the dunes themselves, which is precisely why it stays quiet — you're looking at genuine desert wilderness rather than a dune field with camps built into its edge. It demands the most driving time of the three, and usually a 4x4 for the final stretch, but rewards travellers who want to feel properly off the map.
Driving times from Marrakech and Fes
From Marrakech: Zagora dunes ~7 hours' driving (spread over a 2-day tour), Merzouga ~9–10 hours (spread over 3 days via Ouarzazate and Dades), Chegaga ~10–11 hours. From Fes, Merzouga is actually closer than from Marrakech — around 6–7 hours via the Middle Atlas and Ziz Valley, which is why most 3-day Fes–Marrakech loop tours route through there rather than Zagora or Chegaga.
Which one fits your trip length
- 1–2 days available: Zagora is realistically your only comfortable option.
- 3 days available: Merzouga is the classic choice and pairs naturally with Ait Ben Haddou, Dades and Todra along the way.
