Welcome To Mhamid

M’Hamid El Ghizlane (Arabic: محاميد الغزلان), often shortened to M’Hamid, is a remote desert village in the Zagora Province, southeast Morocco. It is considered the last oasis town before the vast Sahara begins, making it a popular gateway for camel treks and desert excursions to Erg Chigaga, one of Morocco’s largest and most untouched sand dune regions.

M’Hamid offers an authentic Saharan experience, blending ancient nomadic culture, Berber traditions, and peaceful desert life far from the hustle of modern cities.

Historical Background

  • Once a key stop on trans-Saharan trade routes connecting Timbuktu and Marrakech.
  • Historically inhabited by Saharan nomads, Berbers, and Arabs who moved across the desert with caravans of salt, gold, and spices.
  • The name “El Ghizlane” means “gazelles,” hinting at the wildlife that once roamed freely in the region.
  • M’Hamid’s strategic role declined with the end of caravan trade but remains vital for preserving desert traditions and nomadic heritage.
