Welcome To Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen (Arabic: شفشاون‎), also known as the Blue City, is a picturesque mountain town in northern Morocco famous for its stunning blue-washed buildings, serene atmosphere, and Andalusian-Moroccan architecture. Nestled in the Rif Mountains, it offers a unique blend of natural beauty, spiritual charm, and local culture—making it one of Morocco’s most photogenic and beloved destinations.

Historical Background

  • Founded in 1471 as a small fortress by Moulay Ali Ben Moussa Ben Rached El Alami to fight the Portuguese invasions of northern Morocco.
  • Became a refuge for Andalusian Muslims and Jews fleeing the Spanish Reconquista in the 15th century.
  • The city remained off-limits to foreigners (especially non-Muslims) until the 1920s, helping preserve its culture and architecture.
  • The famous blue walls are believed to have been introduced by Jewish refugees in the 1930s, symbolizing heaven, peace, and spirituality.
