Welcome To Tangier

Tangier (Arabic: طنجة‎ Ṭanja, Berber: ⵟⴰⵏⵊⴰ Ṭanja) is a vibrant port city in northern Morocco, uniquely located where the Mediterranean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean at the Strait of Gibraltar. Known as the gateway between Europe and Africa, Tangier blends North African tradition with European flair, making it one of Morocco’s most cosmopolitan cities.

Historical Background

Tangier has over 2,500 years of history, shaped by Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, Portuguese, Spanish, and French.

  • Originally founded by Phoenician traders (5th century BCE) as Tingis.
  • Became a Roman colony and later part of the Islamic empire.
  • Ruled by Portuguese and Spanish forces between the 15th–17th centuries.
  • Became an International Zone from 1923 to 1956, governed by multiple foreign powers—giving it a reputation as a haven for artists, spies, and exiles.
  • Reintegrated into independent Morocco in 1956.

Tangier’s complex past has resulted in a cultural and architectural blend that’s unlike anywhere else in Morocco.
