Welcome To Merzouga

Merzouga (Arabic: مرزوقة‎, Tamazight: ⵎⵔⵣⵓⴳⴰ) is a small desert village in southeastern Morocco, located near the Algerian border in the Errachidia Province. It is world-renowned as the gateway to Erg Chebbi, one of Morocco’s most spectacular Sahara sand dune fields, with dunes rising up to 150 meters high.

Merzouga is a top destination for desert tourism, offering unforgettable experiences like camel treks, 4×4 excursions, nomadic camps, and starry desert nights.

Heaven On Earth

Historical Background

Merzouga was historically a rest stop for nomadic Berber tribes and a caravan point on trans-Saharan trade routes. The local population is largely of Amazigh (Berber) origin, with a strong tradition of music, storytelling, and hospitality.

Over the last few decades, Merzouga transformed from a quiet village into a major tourist destination, especially after gaining international fame through photography, documentaries, and travel influencers showcasing the vast dunes of Erg Chebbi.

Despite modernization, many families still live in traditional homes or as semi-nomadic pastoralists, preserving deep cultural roots.
